Shie Boon was the director of MOVE Academy Singapore from late 2017 to mid 2022, which management seperated in May 2022. Before he was director, he was a student-turned-coach in the academy, also once known as ADD Academy Singapore. ADD stands for L'art du Déplacement which founders Shie Boon met in late 2014 at a Parkour x Dance workshop during the 1st semester of his Diploma in Dance in Lasalle College of the Arts. At that point at age 22, he was at the most depressing period of his life, finding little meaning in the conventional route of pursuing a degree.
Thankfully, L'art du Déplacement caught his eye because for the first time in his life, he found other people whom exuded a sense of purpose and a love for life and others. He vividly remembers the Yamakasi founders performing impossible stunts and teaching in a manner he has never experienced before - effortlessly blending structure and freedom. Growing up through the local education system where high grades seemed valued beyond human relations, an education style where the student was invited to participate and where camaraderie was celebrated was a breath of fresh air he desperately needed.
He promptly left Lasalle (facing humiliation as he already had a contentious relationship with his family after choosing to turn down a placing for Computer Science in Nanyang Technological University, and then had to have his parents spend $9K for his first semester in Lasalle only to leave once again), went to work as a salesperson and attended ADD Academy Singapore's classes weekly, eventually becoming a coach late 2015.
It would only be less than 2 years before his new home was threatened to shut down. The team of coaches back then suffered from an internal dispute causing a fragmented student base. Business was also not doing well and the director needed to cut losses by closing it. Not wanting the very thing that changed his life disappear, Shie Boon volunteered to continue running it to preserve its goodness such that others like him may one day benefit from coming across L'art du Déplacement.
It was during this period, in November 2017, that Shie Boon met a 64 year old lady who took interest in trying L'art du Déplacement with the hope that it could help her with her balancing problems. She fell often and constantly relied on pushing a trolley around for stability. Shie Boon worked with her for the next two months and managed to help her walk without relying on the trolley for support.
